It is not designed to carry a couple of hundred kg for a couple of hundred meters. It’s designed to carry a couple of hundred kg every day, day in day out.

“

The big pro for me is it’s taking a massive amount of strain off my body. Something like this can enable me to keep doing my job — I don’t want to do anything else. I’m having too much fun being on set.

Andrew Lock

All I’m doing is steering it and pushing down with my thumb. I’m not pulling on it at all — it’s a very, very cruisy experience.

It makes so much sense. When you go with it, everybody will look at you — the feedback was just really good.

The Zipr 4WD has been a godsend on set — a small, budget-limited crew lugging heavy kit through muddy fields, studio builds and city centres. Packs down small, sets up without tools, and it is FAST!

“

Carting in lights and equipment is no longer a chore but a joy. This thing is built like a tank — I’ve used it in rain, snow and ice and it’s still working as it should.

What I love about having the ZIPR with me was that I always had my kit prepared and right next to me. If I needed to access anything, it was right there — and when I was done with a take, I could just jump on it and ride to my next location.

COMMON QUESTIONS

ZIPR CART — COMMON QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Based on the questions and concerns raised in professional reviews.

Is the ZIPR difficult to manoeuvre in tight spaces? +
The ZIPR’s turning radius is wider than a standard hand trolley due to its dual-wheel differential drive. For tight corridors, we recommend using the push/tow mode where the motor is disengaged — the cart’s narrow folded width (29 cm) lets it navigate most standard doorways. The 4WD model’s selectable drive modes give you more control in technical terrain.
How does the open cargo area compare to a tiered production cart? +
ZIPR is designed as a mobility platform — not a shelving unit. The 183-litre flat cargo bed is ideal for cases, bags, and flight cases. For vertical organisation, ZIPR accessories like Side Saddles ($99) add carry capacity on both sides. If you need dedicated shelving, ZIPR pairs perfectly with folding trolleys as a motorised companion.
Is the price justified for professional use? +
At $1,499 (2WD) and $1,999 (4WD), ZIPR is a professional production tool — comparable to a quality lighting stand set or a day rate for a grip. For teams doing regular load-ins, the time saved across a year of productions easily offsets the initial investment. Rental houses report ZIPR earning its cost back within the first few hires.
Will ZIPR really not interfere with audio on set? +
As confirmed in the Newsshooter review, ZIPR’s brushless hub motors are virtually silent in operation. The puncture-proof solid rubber tyres also reduce rolling noise on hard floors. As long as the cart is stationary during takes, it will not affect your audio capture.
How quickly can you set it up on arrival to a shoot? +
After initial familiarisation, ZIPR sets up in under 3 minutes and packs down in 2. The tool-free folding system and quick-release battery mean you go from boot of a van to operational in the time it takes to get your first case out.
Is the 4WD model worth the extra cost? +
After testing both side by side, Andrew Lock from Gaffer & Gear found the 4WD handles gutters, intersections, and rough surfaces significantly better. On wet grass with a heavy load, the 2WD can struggle — the 4WD keeps moving with less user effort. His verdict: for professional use with varied terrain, the 4WD upgrade is worth it.
How heavy is ZIPR to move when it’s folded up? +
The 4WD model weighs 33 kg folded. In practice, you tip it back onto its rear wheels and roll it — so you’re never lifting the full weight. Andrew Lock found it manageable solo for loading and unloading, even in a tight van.
Can you load a fully packed ZIPR up a van ramp? +
Yes — the 4WD model drove up a van ramp with 200 kg loaded, with a little help from the operator on the steepest section. The 2WD required reducing the payload to around 100 kg for ramp loading. If your workflow involves regular van-to-location transfers, the 4WD is the better choice.
What about cargo volume — can it carry enough for a full kit? +
Andrew Lock found volume (not weight) to be the main practical limitation on long shoot days. His solution: lay light stands and milk crates across the full width of the cart. The ZIPR’s platform width matches a standard apple box and a standard milk crate exactly — making vertical stacking both stable and efficient. For bulkier loads, ZIPR Side Saddles add carry capacity on both sides. Pair it with ZILR’s professional cable kits and USB-C power solutions to keep your full kit organised and ready to roll.
What happens if ZIPR can’t get up a steep hill? +
If you release the throttle on a slope, ZIPR’s brakes engage automatically — it will not roll away. The cart then enters a controlled reverse mode, allowing you to safely back down and reassess. You’re always in control, even on gradient terrain.
